"Working properly" and "not initialised" at the same time: the two Windows layers decoded — and the documents and photographs recovered from between them

Her elimination was complete and her evidence was contradictory — which is precisely what makes the case worth a page. The Toshiba external: plugged in, "it is not showing. The light is on, I can hear it working," and the safely-remove menu "can see there is a USB 3 device there." Disk Management: the drive present but "not initialised." And then the sentence that sends thousands of people down the wrong road every week — right-click, Properties: "this device is working properly." She'd tried every port on her laptop and a second laptop entirely; same story everywhere. Her question was the right double: what's the problem, and can the documents and photos all be recovered? The answer to the second is below. The answer to the first is that both of Windows' statements were true — about two different things — and knowing which layer says what is the difference between calm and a formatted drive.

The decode: which layer "working properly" describes — and which one holds your files

Windows talks to an external drive across layers, and its status messages come from different floors of the building. The floor her reassurance came from: the "working properly" verdict in Device Properties describes the USB device — the enumeration layer: did something connect, introduce itself, get a driver, and answer the bus's housekeeping? Hers did, impeccably — hence the light, the audible spin, the eject-menu listing, and the clean bill of health. That layer genuinely was working properly; Windows wasn't lying, merely answering a much smaller question than she was asking. The floor her files live on: Disk Management's "not initialised" describes the storage — Windows asked the disk for its partition table, the map that says what volumes exist, and received nothing readable; and a system that can't read the map reports the territory as blank and offers to draw a fresh one. Put together, the two verdicts stop contradicting and start diagnosing: a drive whose front-of-house runs perfectly while its substantive reads fail — enumeration cheap and served, media-level access failing — the standard portrait of a drive-side fault in the firmware or read chain, which her whole-elimination (every port, second machine) had already cleared of every external suspect. Two standing warnings complete the decode. First: "not initialised" is an offer to format wearing helpful clothing — initialising writes a fresh empty map over exactly the territory her documents and photos occupy, and declining it, as she implicitly did, is the single most important non-action in this genre. Second: the "working properly" sentence is this archive's nominee for most misleading string in the operating system — not because it's false, but because it answers the doorbell question in a tone that sounds like it answered the vault question.
