Looks fine, ticks constantly: why the unmarked drive inside a cracked case is still the casualty — and a couple of hundred gigabytes of photographs brought home

His post-drop damage report split neatly into the visible and the audible — and trusted the wrong one, as almost everyone does. The WD Passport was dropped and "no longer works": "the outside casing (plastic cover) was damaged, but the inner hard drive itself appears to be fine" — and yet, plugged in, "it just makes a constant ticking sound and doesn't appear on my computer... doesn't seem to register as being plugged in." The stakes: perhaps a couple of hundred gigabytes, "many irreplaceable photos," and a framing this trade should bottle — hoping to recover them "or at least recover as much as possible." Realism built in before the first reply. The page's job is the gap between his two observations: why a drive can look perfectly fine and be the accident's true casualty — and why the ticking, not the appearance, was always the report that counted.

The decode: why appearance is the least qualified witness — and what the crack did and didn't absorb

The fallacy, stated plainly: a hard drive's vulnerable parts are all internal and all invisible — heads flying at nanometre heights, a balanced arm, precision bearings — and none of them report their condition on the outside of the drive. The metal case of the drive itself is robust precisely so that it never tells you anything; "appears to be fine" is therefore always true and never informative, because the components that a drop injures cannot appear any way at all. Meanwhile the cracked plastic enclosure gets read as good news — it took the hit — and the physics half-agrees: enclosures do absorb and spread some impact energy, and a cracked case has genuinely spent force that would otherwise have reached the drive. But absorption is partial, not complete: the deceleration that cracks rigid plastic has, by that very fact, been severe — and the sharp stop travelled through the case, through the mounting, and into the mechanism, where the heads' microscopic flying geometry pays for what the plastic couldn't fully cash. Which is where the audible witness takes over: the constant ticking is the drive's own damage report — the head assembly attempting its start-up reads, failing, retrying on a mechanical metronome — and "doesn't register as being plugged in" follows directly, a drive that cannot complete its start-up never reaching the introductions. Between a drive that looks fine and a drive that ticks, the ears win every time; his enquiry contained the full diagnosis, just distributed across the wrong confidence levels. And his "as much as possible" framing gets its welcome here: that is exactly the honest shape of impact recoveries — coverage typically closing very high, with any losses bounded to the impact's territory and itemised — and a customer who asks for the honest version tends to receive the best one, because nothing is spent performing certainty.

The recovery

Under laminar airflow the invisible damage became visible at last: the head assembly spent by the fall — the ticking's author — while the platters beneath showed the clean surfaces his prompt stop had protected (the drive was plugged in briefly, heard, and retired; the ticking never got its long residency). A matched donor stack restored the mechanism, and the PC-3000 imaged the drive at post-impact tempo, coverage closing in the high ninety-nines — the "as much as possible" his enquiry had asked for resolving, in the event, to very nearly everything. The volume mounted whole from the image; the irreplaceable photographs were opened and verified across the collection first, the remainder following; and delivery went out on new media in duplicate, with the cracked enclosure returned as the retired bodyguard it had half-been — credited in the report for the force it absorbed, and overruled, in writing, on everything it had implied about the drive inside.

Outcome

The photographs home, the appearance overruled, the realism rewarded — and the cosmetic doctrine filed for every post-drop inspection happening right now. Judge drives by sound, never by sight: the injury-prone parts are internal and mute to the eye — a cracked case plus a ticking drive means the plastic absorbed some of the hit and the heads took the rest, and "the drive looks fine" belongs on no damage report anywhere. Stop at the tick: one brief listen is diagnosis; repeated sessions are the heads rehearsing failure over your photographs — his short exposure is half the reason the coverage closed so high. And keep his phrasing: "as much as possible" invites the honest ledger — high coverage, bounded losses, itemised — which is the real product this trade sells, and the one appearance can never estimate. The case cracked so you could see it. The drive ticked so you could hear it. Only one of them was telling you what happened inside.

After a drop: the inspection that matters

Skip the visual once-over — internal damage doesn't show — and listen instead: ticking, clicking or beeping on power is the real report, and it means power down after one short session. Don't be reassured by an unmarked drive or an intact-looking mechanism, and don't be alarmed into force by a cracked case; both are outside witnesses to an inside event. Note what you heard, how long it ran, and what the computer saw (nothing, here) — then let the enquiry carry the honest ask: as much as possible, verified, itemised.
