The three hundredth case file in this archive opens with its oldest sentence, stated barer than anyone has stated it: "I have a 3TB Barracuda and it just vanished." His particulars sharpened the vanishing into something stranger: the drive "doesn't show up in Disk Management, doesn't show up in BIOS — but strangely does show up in Intel Rapid Storage." Stranger still: "it spins like it's being read, but only if it's in my E: slot. If I change slot, it's dead. If I use a USB-SATA cable, it's dead. Totally unrecognised." And the sentence every vanished-drive owner eventually says, honoured here because it's true: "Computer hasn't moved, hasn't changed. Nothing." The decode: one witness, one doorway — a drive on the very edge of answering

The one witness: BIOS and Disk Management ask a drive the full question — introduce yourself, declare your geometry, stand ready — and give up quickly when the answer stalls. The Intel Rapid Storage layer sits differently in the machine: its own driver, its own channel conversation, its own patience — and a drive whose start-up has degraded to the brink can manage the short answer (its firmware identity, name and rank) for that one asker while failing the full examination for everyone else. RST seeing what BIOS can't isn't a glitch or a ghost; it's a measurement — the drive is alive at the identity layer and failing at the readiness layer, which locates the fault in the start-up sequence (firmware and mechanism margins) and, crucially, promises that the data behind it has never been addressed at all, let alone harmed. The one doorway: SATA slots on a board are near-identical, not identical — channels differ minutely in controller lane, initialisation timing, power delivery at spin-up — differences healthy drives never notice. A drive on the very edge of completing its start-up becomes an instrument sensitive enough to notice: one slot's particular timing and power margin tolerates its degraded introduction; the others, and the brisker USB-SATA bridge, time out a fraction too early. "Only in my E: slot" is the drive telling him how close to the line it is standing — and the correct reading of that message is the one he took: stop opening the door.
