Her enquiry contained a journey and a paradox, and both deserve their pages. The journey: her WD My Passport stopped showing in Finder, so she "contacted Apple, who said to contact the manufacturer, who said to contact a data recovery company" — a chain that reads like being passed around and was, in fact, correct at every single step, for reasons worth spelling out. The paradox: her observations — precise ones — showed a drive both present and absent: greyed out in Disk Utility; making noises "how it did when it worked"; an eject button that responds but doesn't eject; visible in the maker's own utility, where it passes the Drive Status Check — "SMART status passed." A failing drive, carrying a clean bill of health. The decode of that paradox is the page — because "SMART passed" reassures thousands of people a week into exactly the wrong conclusion.

Two decodes: why the chain was right, and why the clean bill meant so little
The referral chain first, redeemed: each desk told her the truth of its own scope. Apple supports the Mac — and her Mac was working perfectly, faithfully reporting a drive it couldn't mount. The manufacturer warranties the hardware — replacement, not retrieval, as another case in this batch spells out at length. And data recovery is precisely the third trade the second desk named. Three handoffs, zero errors: the chain wasn't the runaround it felt like; it was the ecosystem's actual map, walked in the correct order — filed here so the next walker recognises the route as progress. Now the paradox, decoded: a SMART check is not a read of your data. It is a poll of the drive's self-reported health counters — tallies of past errors, reallocations, temperature history — plus, at most, a brief self-test; a status "pass" means the counters the drive chooses to report haven't crossed the thresholds the checker chooses to watch. Whole categories of real failure live outside that arrangement: degradation the firmware hasn't tallied yet, faults in the data path that stall every substantive read while identity and counters still serve, media territory failing precisely where her volume's structures live. Her drive was the pattern exactly — greyed in Disk Utility because the volume wouldn't mount (real reads failing), sounding normal (the mechanism's gross function intact), enumerating in the vendor tool (identity cheap to serve), and passing SMART (the counters, honestly polled, hadn't caught up with the truth). The clean bill was accurate about what it measured and irrelevant to what she needed — the inverse bookend, within this same batch, of the drive whose SMART read "not available": telemetry absent means the fault runs deep; telemetry passing means only that the test runs shallow.
The recovery
The bench asked the question SMART doesn't — can the data territory actually be read? — and the answer shaped the work: the drive's data path was degrading in exactly the regions its counters hadn't yet minuted, the volume's structures caught in the failing territory, which is why Finder saw nothing and Disk Utility greyed out while every status check smiled. On the PC-3000 through the USB Stabilizer, the degraded regions were negotiated under management — bounded reads, patient passes — and the healthy expanse banked at pace; coverage closed in the high ninety-nines, the volume reconciled and mounted from the image, and her files came back verified across the set on new media. The report closed the paradox in writing for her records: fault confirmed and treated, SMART's pass explained as the shallow measure it is, and the referral chain formally commended — every desk on it had told her exactly where to go next, and the last one was right.
Outcome
Full recovery from a drive with a clean bill of health — and the page's filings for the two things her enquiry taught. On the chain: "contact X, who says contact Y" is often the ecosystem working, not failing — Apple owns the computer, makers own the hardware promise, labs own the data; recognising the map saves the frustration, and her walking it briskly saved the drive further testing. On the clean bill: never let "SMART passed" overrule a drive's actual behaviour — a volume that won't mount, an eject that won't eject, files that won't read are the real test results, and health counters trail reality by design; equally, treat any SMART warning as urgent (the counters understate, so a complaint from them is late news). Status checks answer "what has the drive admitted?" The bench answers "what can the drive still do?" Hers could do everything, once asked properly.
Drives that pass their checks and still don't work
Believe the behaviour, not the bill: unmountable, greyed-out, or unreadable outranks any "SMART passed" — the check polls counters, not your files. Stop re-running status tests and vendor utilities once the paradox appears; each pass is more load for no new truth. Note the exact combination (what sees the drive, what fails) — it maps the fault's depth — and treat a SMART warning as the opposite case: counters understate, so their complaints are always urgent.
