His week told a complete story, and his enquiry told it well. "My desktop PC started blue-screening with various errors about a week ago. Disk activity on the drive (not the boot drive) was around 100%." He tried the reasonable things — a disk check among them — and "lo and behold, it failed completely yesterday morning. BIOS couldn't see it." A settings toggle (the drive-mode switch in the BIOS) changed nothing; so he pulled the drive from the chassis, connected it directly, and made the observation his hope now rests on: "it is spinning up with no grinding... so I'm hoping it's just the controller board." The decode: what 100% measures, what the check cost — and the board hope, audited fairly
The pinned meter, translated: disk activity at 100% doesn't mean the drive is doing a great deal of useful work — it means the drive is saturated: every request taking so long, through internal retries and re-reads, that the queue never empties. A healthy drive at heavy load still clears its queue; a drive pinned at 100% for a week while the system merely exists is a drive spending its entire capacity on failing politely — retry saturation, the machine drowning in one member's re-asked questions, with the blue screens as the system tripping over reads that never returned. It is among the clearest early warnings Windows ever shows, and its correct reading is: image this drive now, while it still answers slowly rather than not at all. The disk check, graded as this archive always grades it: reasonable instinct, wrong medicine — a full-surface examination is a sustained workout, and on a drive already saturated with retries it re-asks every failing question at maximum intensity; "failed completely the morning after" is the standing pattern, the check finishing what the week had scheduled. (A settings toggle afterwards was the harmless-misdirected classic — drive-mode switches change how the system talks to a drive, not whether a failed one can answer.) The board hope, heard fairly and audited honestly: his reasoning has real shape — a shorted or failed board can produce BIOS invisibility, and quiet spin-up does acquit the grosser mechanical failures. But the week's arc argues the other way: boards die suddenly and silently; they don't announce themselves with seven days of retry saturation, because retries are the media and firmware struggling, not the electronics. The likelier anatomy: a drive whose surface decline saturated it for a week, whose firmware layer then collapsed under the check's load — leaving a mechanism that spins perfectly (his observation, correct) around a translation layer that no longer answers (the BIOS's observation, equally correct). Hope is the cheaper story; the assessment exists to find out which story is true, free, before any figure attaches to either.
