The foot that mattered was the timing, not the height: an in-operation drop decoded — and the drive that briefly came back, recovered properly

Her account contained the one detail that changes a drop case's whole physics: the WD Passport for Mac "fell out of the cable while in use onto the floor — only from roughly a foot." The aftermath came in two acts, both precisely observed: first a wounded interval — "initially the device would show up on my laptop, but when trying to access the files the laptop would freeze" — and then the silence: no longer showing up on either of two Macs, running with its light on, "and makes a beeping or clicking noise every few minutes." A foot is nothing, as this archive keeps explaining. But while in use is everything — because a drive's vulnerability isn't really about how far it falls. It's about what its heads were doing when it landed.

The decode: parked versus flying — and what the two-act aftermath was saying

The physics that made her foot count double: a powered-off drive travels and falls with its heads parked — retracted to a safe ramp or landing zone away from the data surfaces, the configuration drives are designed to survive knocks in. A drive in use is a different machine entirely: its heads are airborne, flying at nanometre height directly over the spinning platters — and a fall in that state sends the heads down onto, or skidding across, the exact surfaces holding the data, with the yanked cable adding an uncontrolled power cut mid-flight for good measure. The trade's blunt hierarchy: a six-foot fall parked is often kinder than a one-foot fall flying — which is why "only from roughly a foot" and "while in use" belong in the same sentence the way she put them, and why the second clause was always the diagnosis. The two acts, read in order: the wounded interval — mounting but freezing on access — was the drive surviving the landing partially: enough intact to introduce itself, its damaged heads then stalling on every real read, each freeze another pass of injured hardware over the platters; and the progression to total invisibility with periodic beeping is that margin spending itself — the mechanism now failing even its start-up, retrying on a timer. The gentle grading her conduct earns: trying to access a drive that reappears after a fall is the most natural act in the world, and the freezes were the drive's way of saying stop — which, importantly, she then did, before the interval could cost more than it did. The standing doctrine the two acts write together: a drive that comes back wounded after a drop is not recovering — it's offering you one careful chance, and the right spend of that chance is a single copy attempt of the most irreplaceable folder or, better, no spend at all: power down and escalate while the interval's odds still hold.

The recovery

Under laminar airflow the in-flight drop's bill was read: the head assembly spent — the freezes' and the beeping's shared author — with the platters showing the light contact signature of an unparked landing at their margins, the surfaces' working expanse preserved by how early the access attempts stopped. A matched donor stack restored the mechanism, and the PC-3000 imaged the terabyte at post-trauma tempo: cooperative territory banked first, the contact-marked regions negotiated last in bounded, managed passes. Coverage closed in the high ninety-nines, the honest ledger locating its small losses exactly where the landing had signed; the volume mounted whole from the image, and her files came home verified across the set on new media in duplicate — with the report making the physics explicit for her records: height incidental; operational state decisive; prompt cessation of access attempts materially preserved the outcome.

Outcome

Substantial recovery from the worst-timed kind of small fall — and the doctrine filed for every drive currently dangling from a cable over a desk edge. Judge drops by state, not height: in-use means heads flying, and heads flying means even tiny falls land on the data itself — the reason working drives deserve flat, stable, cable-slack-managed positions more than travelling ones do. Treat a post-drop reappearance as a last offer, not a recovery: mounting-but-freezing is wounded hardware working over your files — one careful decision, then power down; every freeze after the first is spent margin. And retire the yank hazard at source: a drive that can be pulled off a surface by its own cable is one snag from this page — route the lead, seat the drive, or better, let the working copy live on the machine and the portable live in a drawer. Dropped while running

Power down at once — an in-use fall lands on flying heads, and every post-drop access attempt sends damaged hardware back over the platters. If it reappears, resist the relief: freezing on access means stop, and the safest spend of a wounded interval is no spend at all.
