Her troubleshooting produced a result that looks impossible and teaches something most people never learn about USB cables. The WD My Passport Ultra — "many childhood photos and videos", always reliable — stopped being recognised by her laptop: with the original cable it still manages the connection beep, appears in settings, and returns "device error." Reasonably suspecting the cable, she bought a new one — and with the replacement, "it didn't even make the connection beep." The decode: cables that can't carry data, and what the paradox actually proved

The secret hiding in the accessories drawer: not all USB cables are wired equally. A data cable carries power lines and data lines; but a vast population of leads — sold for charging gadgets, bundled with lamps and speakers and toothbrushes, visually identical to the real thing — are charge-only: power wires present, data wires simply absent from the copper. Plug a hard drive into one and the drive may light and spin (power flows) while the computer hears nothing whatsoever — no chime, no enumeration — because the wires that would carry the introduction don't exist. Her replacement, bought or found in good faith, was almost certainly exactly this: not a worse cable, a mute one — and "didn't even beep" is a charge-only lead's complete résumé. Which re-scores her whole experiment: a substitution test is only evidence when the substitute is known-good, and hers accidentally wasn't — so the paradox, correctly read, runs the other way. The original cable is the one that carried a real conversation: connection chime (enumeration beginning), presence in settings (identity served), and then "device error" — the drive itself failing the substantive part of its own introduction. Through working copper, the drive got as far as saying its name and no further: a drive-side start-up failure, with the cable not merely acquitted but revealed as the case's only healthy component. The recovery

The bench opened by settling the cable question with instruments — the original lead verified healthy, the replacement confirmed as data-less, the paradox closed in five minutes — and the case then ran where the corrected elimination pointed: the drive's own start-up failure, traced to the mechanism, addressed with matched donor attention under laminar airflow. On restored function the PC-3000 imaged the drive at standard tempo, coverage closing in the high ninety-nines; the volume mounted whole from the image; and the verification ran in the order the enquiry's second sentence had quietly set — the childhood photographs and videos opened and played across the years first, the remainder following. Know that charge-only cables exist — they're everywhere, they're indistinguishable by eye, and they turn substitution tests into false evidence: verify any test cable on a working device first, or buy one marked for data/sync. Read "device error" through a working cable as the drive speaking: chime-plus-settings-plus-error means enumeration starts and the drive fails its own introduction — a drive-side fault, and the point to stop testing rather than escalate through more ports and leads. When the replacement cable performs worse

Suspect a charge-only lead: no chime at all usually means no data wires at all — test the replacement on a device you know works before trusting its verdict. Keep the original cable with the drive (it may be the only proven-good link), record exactly what happens with each lead, and stop once a working cable still returns errors: that's the drive talking. Buy replacements sold explicitly as data or sync cables — and label the drawer's silent majority for the chargers they are.
