The accident in this enquiry had two layers, and the second is the one that decides everything. During a shoot, one of their videographers accidentally formatted his 128GB SD card halfway through — and then, before anyone realised, "recorded a few clips on top of it after." They'd tried recovery themselves, and tried a recovery company, and could quote the state of play precisely: the data appears to still be on the card "but it is not playable" — the prior firm reporting that "standard recovery techniques have thus far been unsuccessful in retrieving usable data." The decode: what each layer took, and why the earlier output wouldn't play

Layer one — the format: an in-camera quick format erases the card's index, not its contents; the first half of the shoot remained physically present the moment the format completed, unlisted but intact — the state this archive recovers from weekly, and the reason "the data is still on the card" was a fair reading. Layer two — the clips recorded after — is the layer that bills: the freshly formatted card allocated the new recordings wherever its empty map suggested, and every block those clips landed on is a genuine overwrite — gone in the fullest sense the trade knows, for any laboratory, by any method — while everything they didn't land on survives. The honest geometry, stated before any work: a few clips on a 128GB card is a bounded footprint, so the expectation is a substantial recovery with real, named casualties where the new footage fell — and any firm promising completeness against an overwrite is promising past the physics. Now the unplayable output, decoded rather than dismissed: the prior attempts' files that "won't play" are the standard product of signature-carving video from a formatted card — modern cameras write large recordings in fragments, scattered per the card's allocation, and a carver that finds a video header and reads forward blindly stitches together whatever follows, fragment boundaries and all: files with real footage inside and broken structure outside, present but unplayable. "Standard techniques unsuccessful" was an honest sentence about that method's ceiling. The method above the ceiling is fragment-aware: the card imaged whole at chip level, the original filesystem's surviving traces used to map fragment order where they persist, the footage reassembled clip by clip in correct sequence, and each rebuilt recording's container repaired until it plays — because for a client shoot, playable is the only definition of recovered.

The recovery — rebuilt to play, billed by the map

The card was imaged once, write-blocked, and the two layers worked in order on the copy: the pre-format shoot's fragments located and reassembled with the mapping the prior output had lacked, containers rebuilt, and every recovered clip verified by full playback — footage running end to end, audio in sync, the state the earlier unplayable files had only gestured at. Then the honest bill, delivered as a per-clip ledger against the shoot's timeline: the substantial majority of the first half recovered to playing video; a bounded set of clips lost in part or whole exactly where the post-format recordings had landed, each named, so the client conversation could be had with a list rather than a shrug; and the post-format clips themselves — real footage too — extracted and included, since they were never the enemy, only the eraser. Delivery on new media in duplicate, the card retired, and the report closing with the working-shooter's doctrine the whole accident writes: cards format only after ingest is verified — copied, counted, spot-played — and a two-slot camera recording to both cards at once is the cheapest insurance this profession sells itself.

Outcome

The shoot substantially home and playing, the losses counted clip by clip — and the page's filings for every professional holding a formatted card. Stop at the moment of discovery: the format took the index, but only further recording takes footage — every clip shot after the mistake erases in a way no one can undo, so the card comes out of the camera the second the error surfaces, whatever the shoot's pressure. Read "present but unplayable" as method, not verdict: carved video that won't play means fragment-blind recovery met fragmented recordings — reassembly-based work sits above that ceiling, and a prior firm's honest "standard techniques unsuccessful" is a description of their toolbox, not your footage. And ask the cost question the way they did: process and pricing, up front, in writing — free assessment, fixed figure, no-recovery-no-fee is the structure that lets a business decide on facts. The client's footage was recoverable the whole time. The few clips on top were the only part that was ever truly gone — and now, at least, they're a named list instead of a mystery.

Formatted mid-shoot — especially with new footage on top

Eject the card immediately; the format spared everything, and only further recording spends it. Don't run carvers that output unplayable files and call it done — fragmented video needs reassembly, not just discovery. Keep any prior recovery output and reports (they map what was tried), expect a per-clip ledger against the overwrite's footprint, and demand playback verification: for video work, "recovered" means "plays." Then make the workflow change: format only after verified ingest, and shoot dual-slot wherever the camera allows.
