His enquiry arrived with the tidiest evidence file in the genre: a working proof-of-life, and an exact target. Just back from holiday, he found his 64GB SanDisk card unreadable — "nothing showing on the card according to my laptops" — while a different card downloads fine (readers and cables acquitted by his own test). But: "I can see all the images on the card using my camera playback facility." All 1,060 of them. His backups run through image 795; the target, stated like a works order: frames 796 to 1060, all RAW files. The decode: why the camera stays loyal when computers give up — and why that's the hopeful version

A card readable by its camera and blank to every computer looks like a paradox and is actually a gradient. The two devices ask the same card very different questions. A camera is the card's gentlest reader: purpose-built firmware, conservative speeds, patient retries, one small task at a time — playback flipping through images the way the card was designed to serve them on its easiest day. A computer's card reader is the demanding one: full-speed bus negotiation, the operating system mounting the volume wholesale, indexers and thumbnailers hammering the filesystem the moment it appears — a barrage a marginal card can no longer answer, so the mount fails and the OS reports the only thing it can: nothing here. His card sat exactly on that gradient — degraded enough to fail the strict examiner, healthy enough to satisfy the gentle one — and the split carries the case's good news twice over: the camera's playback is proof of life (the images exist, intact enough to render, all 1,060 of them witnessed), and marginal-but-readable is among the most recoverable states a card can occupy, provided two things happen — the card stops being asked (every failed computer mount stresses the failing margin; every camera browse spends a little of the loyalty) and, crucially, nobody shoots on it again, because the one device that can still write to this card is also the one still willing to. He'd stopped on both counts. The rest was method.

The recovery — audited by his own arithmetic

The bench reads a marginal card the way neither camera nor computer can: at chip level, write-blocked, with the patience of the gentle reader and the completeness of the strict one. The card was imaged in full on the PC-3000 Flash — its degraded regions negotiated in managed passes — and the filesystem extracted from the copy, with a signature-carve of the whole expanse run in parallel as the belt to the braces. Then the audit his enquiry had pre-built: the recovered set reconciled against the camera's own numbering — frames 796 through 1060 located, counted, and verified by opening the RAW files across the range — a 265-for-265 ledger where most recoveries can only offer "everything we found." (Frames 1–795, recovered incidentally and already safe in his backup, travelled along as a labelled bonus set — a free checksum against his existing copies.) Delivery went out on new media, the holiday's second half joining its first; the card retired with its loyalty noted in the report and its marginal condition named as the reason retirement is mandatory, not sentimental.

Resist the tempting workaround — copying images out through the camera's own connection — on a marginal card: it's a long, sustained read through the failing margin, exactly the marathon this archive keeps documenting as the finisher. And borrow his paperwork: knowing your backup line and your camera's frame numbers converts "recover my holiday" into "deliver 796 to 1060" — a target that can be audited to the frame. His was. All 265 of them.

Cards only the camera can still read

Treat the camera's playback as evidence, not access: note the count and the last frame number, then power down and remove the card — no more browsing, absolutely no more shooting, and skip the copy-out-via-camera temptation on anything marginal. Don't format prompts, don't reader-hopping; the computers have told you what they can. State your backup line and frame range in the enquiry — number-bounded targets get frame-counted deliveries, which is the only verification photography really needs.
