Arrested at the end of its own lead: why a drive that never hit anything still took the hit — and the beeping Seagate recovered
The physics in this enquiry hides inside its most reassuring sentence. His Seagate 2TB external was plugged into the laptop and working; needing to move the machine, he set the drive on top of it and lifted — the drive slipped off, "the hard drive lead remained in, and the hard drive didn't hit anything — it was 'caught' by the lead." No floor, no bang, apparently no harm. Except: "the hard drive now beeps when plugged in and doesn't show up." Personal data, not urgent, contact by email please — all honoured. The case's whole value is in reconciling those two facts — caught, yet beeping — because the reconciliation is a piece of physics every portable-drive owner should carry around: the catch was the crash.

The decode: the arrest is the impact — and "operating" made it worse
What damages a falling drive was never the floor as such; it's deceleration — the abrupt end of motion, wherever it comes from. A drive snatched to a halt at the end of its cable experiences the same physics as one meeting laminate: velocity to zero in a fraction of an instant, a spike measured in serious multiples of gravity, delivered as the lead snaps taut — plus the whipping oscillation afterwards, the drive bouncing and twisting on its tether, a second helping the floor never serves. "It didn't hit anything" is true and beside the point: it was caught, and catching is hitting. Two aggravators complete his picture. The drive was plugged in and working when it slipped — platters spinning, heads flying at their nanometre altitude over moving surfaces — which is the configuration in which a shock does its worst; a parked, powered-down drive takes the same jolt far more gracefully, and this archive's transit cases turn on exactly that difference. Cable arrests, hand catches, landings on beds and bags — every abrupt stop is the stop that matters, and a drive that starts beeping after any of them has told you what happened regardless of what it touched. Treat the caught drive exactly like the dropped one: disconnect, stop, describe the event honestly (his precise account — plugged in, slipped, caught by the lead — pre-wrote the diagnosis), and skip the reassurance that gravity was interrupted. Count every catch as a drop: the arrest delivers the deceleration, and a drive that was powered and spinning took it at its most vulnerable. If beeping or clicking follows, disconnect and stop — no ports, no retries. Never move a laptop with a drive perched on it or dangling from it; unplug first, pocket the drive, and reconnect at the destination.
