"No media" over a terabyte of files: a portable SSD's mid-write collapse — and the chip-level recovery software was never going to reach

The decode: what "zero bytes" means on an SSD — and why the crash timing was no coincidence
This archive has now catalogued the three capacities a failed drive can claim — the wrong size, the right size over lost contents, and this: no size at all — and on a portable SSD the zero-byte presentation reads precisely. Every solid-state drive runs on a controller whose private, constantly-rewritten map — the translation layer between the addresses computers ask for and the physical flash where data lives — is consulted for everything, including the drive's own self-description; a controller that boots and cannot reconcile its map presents exactly as his does: alive enough to enumerate as a device, unable to declare capacity, partitions, or media, because it no longer trusts its own arithmetic. The timing convicts the mechanism: compression is a heavy, sustained write burst — read, crunch, write, update the map, thousands of times a second — and a host-side crash mid-burst is precisely the interruption that catches a translation layer between states, this archive's mid-write genre wearing flash instead of platters. Two things follow, both in his favour. His software verdict was correct and final: recovery applications need a device that presents something to scan, and a zero-byte drive offers them literally no surface — the failure of every tool he tried was structural, not a matter of finding a better one.
