Two hostages, two mechanisms — and why "won't power on" is the more decisive clue

The polite hostage-taking (the neighbouring case's) happens in firmware: the machine powers up but waits forever on a drive that spins yet can't introduce itself. His was a different layer entirely. A modern power supply continuously monitors what its rails feed, and a device drawing far beyond any healthy appetite — the signature of a short circuit — trips the supply's protection in milliseconds: the PSU refuses to start at all rather than pour current into a fault.
