The troubleshooting log in this enquiry was thorough, escalating, and — by a mercy this page must explain rather than rely on — entirely unsuccessful. His 6TB WD Elements died mid-backup: gone from My Computer, showing "Unknown, Not Initialized" in Disk Management. He tried to initialize it: rejected, with "the request failed due to a fatal device hardware error." He tried creating a new partition through DiskPart: same rejection. DiskPart's listing showed the drive's size as zero, though Device Manager still saw the unit. He updated drivers: nothing. But first, the part of his log that deserves the page: every repair he attempted was a write, and the only reason none of them cost him anything is that the drive was too broken to accept them.

Two decodes: what size-zero confesses, and what the refusals were actually refusing

Size zero is one of the more underrated messages in Windows' storage vocabulary. A drive's capacity isn't measured by the computer — it's declared by the drive, from its own internal service records, at introduction time. A unit that appears in Device Manager (electronics answering) but reports zero size has failed to consult its own paperwork: the firmware's working records — the drive's private configuration and translation data — unreadable to the drive itself. That's a fault sitting far beneath partitions, formats or drivers, which retro-grades his whole troubleshooting chain: "Not Initialized" was Windows misreading a paperwork failure as emptiness; the driver updates were aimed three layers too high; and the initialize and DiskPart attempts — here is the uncomfortable part, said plainly because it matters — were instructions to write new structures onto the drive. Initialization writes a partition scheme; partition creation writes more; both, on a drive whose "emptiness" was actually 6TB of invisible data, would have begun overwriting the very front territory a recovery needs. They failed only because the drive's firmware fault ran deeper than the write path — the patient too ill to swallow the wrong medicine. That is luck wearing the costume of a safeguard, and the rule it teaches is the opposite of reassuring: never initialize, partition or format a drive that suddenly "looks empty" — sometimes the drive will accept it, and that's the version of this story with a worse ending.

The recovery

On the PC-3000, the conversation happened at the level his troubleshooting couldn't reach: the drive's damaged firmware records were repaired in its service area, its self-description restored — six terabytes reappearing where zero had been — and the unit brought to a stable, readable state for the only write-free rescue there is: Data Extractor imaged the full drive, patiently and completely, the mid-backup interruption's territory included. The volume mounted whole from the image; the answer to his "all the data?" came back as close to yes as honest work gets — coverage effectively complete, his files verified by opening them across the set — and delivery landed on new media with the backup that had been interrupted finally completed by other means. Outcome

Full recovery — thanks to bench-level repair, and no thanks owed to the safety margin that held by chance. The takeaway, pinned for every future reader mid-escalation with Disk Management open: "Not Initialized" and "size zero" on a drive that was full yesterday are firmware symptoms, not blank slates — the data is behind the paperwork, and every repair Windows offers from that screen is a write aimed at it. Decline them all. His chain ended safely because his drive couldn't cooperate with its own destruction; the next drive might be just healthy enough to comply. Stop at the first "fatal hardware error" — it's the drive telling the truth about itself, and the correct reply is a bench, not a command prompt.
